the hut, st sampsons, guernsey

HRP received a commission to convert an existing warehouse within St Sampsons, Guernsey to form the central distribution Centre for ‘The Hut’ an on-line distributor of dvd’s and cd’s within the Channel Islands. The existing warehouse was constructed by the Germans for use as a sea plane aircraft hanger during the second world war and has since been in use as a furniture storage unit.

Due to the complex nature of the existing frame is was decided to construct a totally self supporting unit within the shell of the existing building, to avoid the need of increasing loads onto the existing frame. The proposal took the form of a structural steel frame for the new areas being enclosed with an external skin of insulated cladding panels thus providing a totally self contained environment. Due to the need to transfer merchandise between floors, a series of conveyors link all floors.

The first phase of the project consisted of the construction of 28000sq.ft of warehouse space over 3 floors, and 2250sq.ft of offices and staff quarters /welfare areas located at ground floor level. Some 40% of the existing unit remained in use as a furniture depository during the construction period and indeed continues as such since the unit has became operational for the Hut.

HRP have now been commissioned to extend the distribution centre into the remaining 40% of the unit, and this work commenced upon site in April 2011 The distribution centre upon completion will have 47900sq.ft. of distribution space and 2900sq.ft of office and staff welfare areas. As part of the second phase works 2 goods lifts are to be installed to serve all floors.
